Overcoming Inconsistency

Nothing is more frustrating than starting all over again... whether it is a weight loss journey, relationships, projects, business etc. Utilise these FOUR steps to start your journey to becoming consistent today!

Step One: ACKNOWLEDGE

Where specifically in your life do you lack consistency?

Think about different areas: Finances, Relationships, Health, Career etc.

Take a few minutes today to write these inconsistencies down and make it personal i.e. I am inconsistent in…

  1. Gym attendance

  2. Responding to messages

  3. Showing up on time to work

  4. Putting money in my savings account

Write it on your phone or on paper, just make sure it’s easy for you to keep!

Take a look at your Inconsistency List and write down your main reasons for failing to be consistent in these things.

For example…

I am inconsistent in going to the gym because:

  • I do not wake up early enough to get it out of the way

  • I often leave it til the end of the day when I am tired

  • I do not enjoy the commute to the gym

  • Other activities often pop up throughout the day which I prioritise over going to the gym

Be honest with yourself. A key step to overcoming inconsistency is understanding your excuses for being inconsistent.

Step Two: UNDERSTAND

Write down the areas in your life where you are CONSISTENT

Same as last time, make it personal i.e. I am consistent in the below areas of my life:

  • Spending time on social media / Netflix

  • Going to work

  • Brushing my teeth

You may find that this list is much shorter than your list of inconsistencies but that is okay.

In each area that you are consistent, write down why. For example:

  1. I am consistent with social media / time on Netflix because it is a source of entertainment and temporarily allows me to ignore my problems

  2. I go to work because I can not afford not to

  3. I brush my teeth because I take pride in my image

Understanding why you perform certain activities regularly will help you to become more consistent in activities you are currently struggle with.

Step Three: PLAN

PLAN to be CONSISTENT.

Now that we have analysed our areas of consistency and inconsistency, it is time to come up with a plan!

I have found that I am the most consistent in certain activities such as cleanliness / socialising for the following reasons:

  1. I enjoy it (socialising with friends)

  2. It is essential to my peace of mind (a clean environment)

  3. I will lose out on a lot if I do not participate (going to work)

  4. Looking good helps me to feel good and approach situations with confidence (dressing up / skincare routine)

Now you can apply these reasons to other areas of your life where you lack consistency, let us take the gym as an example. You can…

  1. Invite friends to the gym and use it as an opportunity to socialise

  2. Engage in mindful exercises like Yoga to start the association of exercise with peace of mind

  3. Think about the health benefits that losing weight will have or the confidence booster that getting in shape may give

Make sure that you also look at your reasons for being inconsistent and make an effort to avoid making those same excuses again.

If you are inconsistent in going to the gym because you do not like the commute then get into the habit of home workouts. If you do not go to the gym because you leave it til the end of the day, then get into the habit of working out as soon as you wake up to get it out of the way.

In summary, consistency is not easy but it is a must to not only attain success but maintain it. Using a few hours to do the above steps can change your life! Let me know your feedback in the comments.
